Don Hall, MD.
A Book by an Ashburn-Area Psychiatrist: The Story Behind Riverside Counseling & Psychiatry
In a world where mental health challenges seem more present than ever—and where genuine, sustained healing often feels elusive—Don Hall offers a powerful testament to what compassionate, community-rooted care can do. His new book, which recounts the founding and journey of Riverside Counseling & Psychiatry (RCP) in Ashburn and Leesburg, Virginia, is more than a personal memoir. It’s a deeply human look at how a local practice became a beacon of hope for families across Loudoun County. This is the author.

Don Hall, MD.
A Psychiatrist's Vision Born of Compassion
Don Hall didn’t set out to build an institution. He set out to help people.
With a background in counseling and a vision for a practice that would serve the whole person—not just the diagnosis—Don opened the doors to what would become Riverside Counseling & Psychiatry in 2002. In those early days, it was a small office with a big heart. No flashy signage. No high-powered branding. Just skilled clinicians and a mission: to walk alongside patients through some of the most difficult chapters of their lives.
Rooted in Ashburn, Serving the Region
What started in Leesburg quickly grew into something larger. With demand from nearby Ashburn and Sterling, and referrals pouring in from pediatricians, schools, churches, and local doctors, RCP became a go-to name in mental health. But it never lost its local soul.
This wasn’t a corporate chain or a revolving-door clinic. It was—and remains—a place where front-desk staff know your name, where the walls are warm and not sterile, and where clinicians meet you with dignity, whether you’re walking in with panic attacks, ADHD, family trauma, or just trying to be heard for once in your life.
The Philosophy That Shaped a Practice
Don’s approach has always been rooted in a belief that healing is collaborative. That therapy isn’t about a professional telling a patient what’s wrong, but about guiding them toward clarity, purpose, and resilience.
Riverside was created with a single vision: to be a place where people could feel genuinely heard, supported, and cared for. Dr. Hall recognized early on that mental health treatment often felt sterile or rushed—and he set out to build something different. From the very beginning, Riverside Counseling focused on pairing clinical excellence with a deeply personal approach. Whether through therapy, psychiatric medication management, or simply having a kind voice answer the phone, the goal was always the same: to create a space where healing could begin.
Over the years, Riverside Counseling & Psychiatry grew to meet the expanding needs of the Loudoun County community. From children struggling in school to adults facing anxiety, depression, or major life transitions, the practice became a trusted ally to people of all ages. Through changes in the mental health landscape—and even as his own professional path shifted—Dr. Hall remained steadfast in his belief that authentic connection was the cornerstone of good care.
While the book featured on this site is not about Riverside or mental health, it’s impossible to understand Don Hall’s story without knowing where he comes from. The same values that shaped Riverside—compassion, insight, humility, and hope—can be found in every chapter of his writing.
